The cultivation of Teff

Writing an article on Teff cultivation brings back memories of the first articles written on the quinoa, now almost 10 years ago, when quinoa, as well as Teff today, was a virtually unknown crop in Italy. A few years later, with happiness we can say that the progress of Italian quinoa, both qualitatively and quantitatively, has certainly been valuable. This premise on the evolution of quinoa as a crop alternative is simply meant to be a wish that Teff may follow the same path. In fact, we believe that the potential of Teff, at the agronomic level, may be even greater than that of quinoa both for its rusticity and for its versatility that allows both spring and second-crop planting.

Planting

Since this is a very small seed, the seedbed must be optimally prepared. To prevent the seed from falling too deep, rolling before sowing is recommended. In any case, an imperfectly prepared soil can be remedied by increasing the seeding density.

Planting can be done in rows (like wheat) or by scattering. The plant competes very well with weeds by covering the ground evenly.

The amount of seed needed is, indicatively, 10-15 kg/ha, on suboptimal seedbeds it is recommended to increase the density. The seed should remain on the surface, 1-1.5 cm, which is why on coarser soils more seed is recommended.

Since Teff is a cereal, the same fertilizers and amounts that are used for straw cereals can be used for background fertilization.

The vegetative phase

During the vegetative phase, teff does not require any special interventions, its rusticity means that it is tolerant to all the typical cereal diseases, some strimming can be done at the tillering stage, and a covering fertilization can be done, but without exaggerating with nitrogen to avoid allurement. If grown as a second crop, some irrigation should be done to maintain moisture in the soil.

The Gathering

Teff, like all straw cereals, is harvested by combine harvester; however, different techniques can be used.

Quinoa, a crop that was unknown until a few years ago, has been enjoying increasing success in recent years both as a food and as a cultivation alternative. Quinoa cultivation in Italy is growing considerably, and if until a few years ago the cultivation of quinoa was something almost unknown, today not only farmers but also administrative bodies are beginning to recognize its value, especially under Organic Farming. Technically, it is a Chenopodiacea, thus a plant that is part of the same family as spinach and beets, and as such to be considered a vegetable crop, a category for which almost all RDPs recognize a greater contribution than cereals and other arable crops under Organic Farming. In some regions, it has not yet been explicitly included in the list of crops because the areas cultivated within the region itself are small, so it is equated with a cereal.

It is important to point out that this is technically incorrect, because. quinoa is considered a "pseudocereal" solely and exclusively because of the use made of the grain, but it is a chenopodiacea, therefore a vegetable and has no botanical connection to cereals. Just think of the extensive use that is made of its fresh leaves in South America.

In this regard, we cite as an example the Lazio Region, which in the notice PSR Measure 11 "Organic Agriculture" - Annex 2 explicitly mentions quinoa among the vegetable crops, with a contribution of 600 euros/hectare.

Italian quinoa, consumption is still increasing and quality is getting better and better

The growth of quinoa consumption does not seem to be slowing down and, even more positive news, the demand for Italian quinoa continues to grow exponentially. Based on market data, we can estimate a growth in demand for Italian BIO quinoa of at least 300 percent from 2019 to the present.

But what is the reason for this growth?

There are many reasons for this, the first, and perhaps the most obvious, is the general increase in the consumption of quinoa, both in grains and processed (flours, puffed, etc.) and especially its use as an ingredient in flour mixes for the baking, pasta and confectionery industries. Yes, even the industry is paying more attention to the Italian product. Another important aspect is undoubtedly the increased attention by the consumer to the origin of the product, especially when we talk about organic product, with a greater focus towards the origin of the product.

In addition, we should not evaluate the factor that probably made the real leap in quality for Italian quinoa: the experience gained both in the field by farmers and agronomists and in the post-harvest and processing phase by operators in this part of the supply chain. The pioneers of quinoa in Italy now have about 10 years of experience on their shoulders, have been able to fine-tune agronomic techniques and machinery, have been able to test numerous varieties (and in this Tuttoquinoa has certainly made an important contribution) and by now, even saponin removal is no longer an obstacle. The quinoa that can be produced today has nothing to envy the South American quinoa from a nutritional and flavor point of view, the only drawback is still the size of the seed, but we know that only the varieties grown on the Andean plateau are able to develop a seed larger than 3mm in caliber.

If we think about the carbon footprint of a quinoa imported from South America, which has traveled about 10,000 km to reach our tables, I think it is very clear what the real added value of Italian quinoa is.
